Making music and then dabbling in the production of that music can be a daunting and aggravating process that consumes hours of time. BFT has spent the last several months making the journey across the bridge between learning to play music and produce the music he plays.
“Obviously, I don’t have a lot of money for a professional recording studio to produce the music I play. In fact, I don’t have a lot of money to invest in a lot of tools to do both music and recording so I have to make do with what I can get. However, you can produce good music and play good music on a budget.”
BFT says (laughingly), I am not sure anyone would want to produce my music or if is that great to begin with but when I got into music some years ago, I told myself, I want to sound good as much as I play well. He said, he made a point to dabble in learning both production and music because he feels good music can sound terrible if produced badly.
“It’s been such a long aggravating battle between the two spheres of music for me but anything you have a passion for is sometimes a love hate relationship. I would not call myself a master of the trade yet in either category –musician or producer, but I feel like I’ve come such a long way and I am so much better for it,” BFT said.
I think it all comes down to one thing if you are a musician on limited means like myself or even a professional. Do you want to sound great and enhance your music by putting in the effort and time and learning or do you just want to squeak by or slap things together without thought? It all shows in what you do. That is the kicker. Most people hire folks to do this dirty work but not everyone can do that,” BFT added.
BFT said he has spent many of hours into sunrise toying with the trades of music and sound. He said he has made countless mistakes and mixed some pretty bad stuff as much as he’s played some bad stuff. BFT said, sometimes, that is the only true way to learn all of these trades well. It can be embarrassing at times but soon enough things begin to come together and blossom if you stick with it.”
BFT added, “we are so fortunate today to have the technology and internet to do both music and sound production. The information is out there for both things so it is a matter of hunting it down and learning how to apply it. You just have to be patient and ready to consume a lot of time and make a lot of mistakes before you see the fruit ripen. That is my experience anyway.”
